Mother fights to cut speeding on road where daughter nearly died

Lucky escape: 11-year-old Emily Wilson

The mother of an 11-year-old girl thrown 20 feet in the air by a car on a "dangerous" road told today how the crash had left her children too scared to cross the street.

Paola Dentamaro started a campaign calling for traffic lights and a zebra crossing on a road near her house in north London after her daughter Emily Wilson was nearly killed.

Emily was lucky to escape with head injuries, cuts and bruises when she was hit by a car as she crossed Brunswick Park Road in New Southgate on her way to school.

Her twin brother Oliver, who saw the crash, has been left traumatised and both children are now too afraid to walk along the road.

Ms Dentamaro, 45, has gathered 80 signatures for her petition calling on Barnet council to introduce measures to slow down cars on the road.

She said: "This is a long road with no speed bumps and no obstructions from left to right. People go past at faster than 30mph, sometimes as fast as 60mph.

"A woman died on this road a few years ago and there have been many accidents."

The crash on September 16 saw Emily thrown into the air and land on her head. The woman driver of the car was stopped at the scene but no arrests have been made.

Ms Dentamaro said: "I got a call from my son, he was in shock. I ran from my house to the road and there she was lying on the ground with blood all around her. It is your worst nightmare.

"I am now having to take them to school and pick them up again afterwards. This is not a safe road, I dread to think who is going to be next.

"My son now can't get it out of his head, they are twins and very close. He keeps having nightmares and seeing what happened in his sleep."

A Barnet council spokesman said: "All road safety concerns and requests for measures are assessed against established criteria that help determine whether any action should be taken.

"The council are happy to investigate safety concerns in Brunswick Park Road should residents want us to."
