MmO2 puts a price on 3G services

Nick Goodway12 April 2012

A TYPICAL third-generation mobile phone customer can expect to spend £44 a month surfing the web, downloading music and video clips and emailing, according to mmO2 which today became the first European network to publish prices for 3G services.

Today's pricing is for mmO2's service on the Isle of Man, which it launched at the end of last year and is the world's only 3G service outside Japan. Mark Briers of mmO2 said: 'The aim of the 3G trial is to find out what customers want and how much they are willing to pay.'

The consumer tariff will be £25 a month for up to 20 megabytes of data. Every megabyte over that will cost £1. So mmO2 calculates that a typical consumer who sends 100 emails (including 10 with pictures or sound clips), plays 4Mb worth of online games, surfs 100 pages on the net and downloads four music tracks and three video clips will spend £44 a month, or £1.40 a day.

ALMOST half of owners are unlikely to use their mobile phones for anything other than voice calls, a survey claims today. Four out of 10 consumers say they have no interest in 3G services.
