Mexican police hunt man with the golden guns

Tool of the trade: a silver machinegun from the weapons haul
12 April 2012

Mexican police have found 30 diamond-studded gold and silver guns in a raid, including three gold plated assault rifles.

Some of the guns found in a building in Zapopan, Guadalajara, bore the name of Oscar Orlando Nava Valencia, right-hand man of one of the most-wanted drug barons, Joaquin Guzman, leader of the Sinaloa cartel.

Near Acapulco, five men were shot dead as they played football in an area riven by a turf war between rival drug gangs. The attackers drove to the field in three cars and opened fire. There was no immediate information on a motive.

On Mexico's southern Pacific coast, the navy announced it had seized a big drug haul. It said a fishing boat and its five-member crew had been captured while transporting nearly 5,300lb of cocaine.

More than 22,000 have died since president Felipe Calderon declared war on the cartels in 2006.
