Lord Rogers claims Prince Charles has planning veto

Prince Charles has a veto over major planning decisions in London, a leading architect has claimed.

Lord Rogers said the influence of the Prince of Wales was so great that developers seek prior approval from Clarence House before committing to projects.

In a New Yorker magazine profile, Lord Rogers said it was “an amazing situation”. He added: “But they’re into minimising risk — and Prince Charles is a risk.”

Lord Rogers, 80, accused the prince of “unconstitutional behaviour” and an “abuse of power” when the royal successfully led a lobbying campaign against the architect’s proposed £3 billion modernist redevelopment plan for Chelsea Barracks.

A spokesman for the prince said his charity Foundation for Building Community was “often approached for advice”.

A spokesman added: “If developers choose to send the Prince of Wales information about upcoming developments that is up to them but the prince does not, and cannot, grant planning permission.”
