Looter was on bail over murder

12 April 2012

A teenager accused of looting during the riots in London was on bail over a gang murder.

The 18-year-old trainee football coach was arrested after up to 25 youths stabbed to death Andrew Jaipaul as he walked near his home in north London. He was later freed on police bail as inquiries into last month's killing continue.

Magistrates were told at the weekend that the teenager looted a mobile phone after smashing his way into a Carphone Warehouse shop in Holloway, just yards from the Andover Estate where Mr Jaipaul was chased and cornered before being repeatedly stabbed.

His brother said: "He's a good boy. He had nothing to do with Andrew Jaipaul's death. He was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. The police need to be careful who they are arresting."

The court also heard the youth had previously breached an Asbo. He was remanded in custody and will reappear in court next week.

Mr Jaipaul's mother Joanna, 52, said at the time of his death she wanted to "cuddle" his killers because "they are in pain too".
