Lawyers track down email rumour source

Daily Mail13 April 2012

Solicitors acting for one of the footballers yesterday tracked down the source of an e-mail naming some of those allegedly involved.

The sender, who works for a large company, was warned that he could face a libel action for making the claims.

He was also told to hand over details of all those who had been sent the message, identify the source of the claim and warned that the matter may be forwarded to the Attorney-General as a possible attempt to pervert the course of justice.

The man's employer was also informed.

A solicitor acting for one of the footballers said: 'The message is quite a simple one: You are not immune from legal action simply because it's on e-mail.'

Internet service providers, which enable companies to operate websites, yesterday called for changes in the law on defamation.

The Internet Service Providers Association, which has more than 70 members, wants those who actually circulate material to be liable, rather than the ISPs which allow the websites to operate.

A spokesman for the ISPA said: 'We just want the law to make sense.'
