Lawrence school closure 'unfair'

Old boy: Stephen was a Blackheath Bluecoat pupil
13 April 2012

The headteacher of Stephen Lawrence's old school says he fears for the future of pupils after councillors in Greenwich voted to close it.

Jeffrey Risbridger said he was not given enough time to transform Blackheath Bluecoat school, where footballers Rio and Anton Ferdinand were also pupils. GCSE results have improved since 2009 when he was brought in.

Mr Risbridger said: "It is hard to understand. We were asked to improve and we have done that." Greenwich blamed a "sustained decline in pupil numbers" and an increasing deficit.

Stephen, 18, was murdered by racists in Eltham in 1993.
