Last London skittles team in danger of collapsing

Miranda Bryant12 April 2012

The last ever London skittles team is in danger of folding because it cannot attract enough youngsters to take up the sport.

The 100-year-old team is down to its last 12 members. Organisers warned that if new members are not found the game will die out.

The game, which uses nine wooden skittles and a wooden disk known as a "cheese", can be traced back to Ancient Egypt.

The London game, also known as Old English Skittles, may have been brought over by Dutch seafarers and was at its peak in 1934.

London Skittles Group meets at the capital's last remaining skittles alley in the Freemason's Arms in Hampstead.
