Knife ordeal of United player's fiancée as raiders target home

Knife ordeal: Manchester United's Darren Fletcher

THREE hooded robbers raided the home of Manchester United player Darren Fletcher and attacked his fiancée.

The gang grabbed Hayley Grice by the hair and held a knife to her throat, forcing her to hand over her engagement ring. One also grabbed her mother, who was staying at the house while Fletcher was abroad with United, and threatened her at knifepoint to hand over jewellery and watches.

The couple's young twin sons were also in the house in Bowdon, Greater Manchester, when the gang kicked open the front door and burst into the living room before 9pm yesterday.

Hours earlier the £50,000-a-week midfielder flew to Italy for his club's Champions League match against Inter Milan.

Fletcher, 25, a Scotland international, is the latest Premier League player to be burgled while away for matches. England captain Steven Gerrard was the victim of a raid in December 2007, and others include former Liverpool striker Peter Crouch.
