King's Speech is clear leader for British film awards

12 April 2012

new film The King's Speech, starring Colin Firth as a stammering King George VI, tops the list of nominations for the British Independent Film Awards announced today.

Reinforcing the buzz that already sees Firth tipped for an Oscar, the film has secured eight nominations including best film, best director for Londoner Tom Hooper, and best supporting actor for Helena Bonham Carter and Geoffrey Rush as well as best actor for Firth himself.

Other films in the running include Never Let Me Go, the adaptation of the Kazuo Ishiguro novel, where Carey Mulligan is up for best actress, sci-fi thriller Monsters by first-time director Gareth Edwards, and The Arbor, about the life of the late playwright Andrea Dunbar, which all secured six nominations.

Johanna von Fischer and Tessa Collinson, the directors of the awards now sponsored by Moët & Chandon, said: "Regardless of budget, each category showcases the wealth and variety of talent committed to making quality British films."

The winners will be announced on December 5.
