Killed London cyclist was ‘academic world leader’

A London university professor killed when he was knocked off his bicycle and dragged under the wheels of a lorry was today described as "one of the intellectual leaders of his generation" by colleagues.

David Vilaseca-Perez, 46, professor of Hispanic studies at Royal Holloway, University of London, died less than 100 yards from his home on Tuesday.

He is believed to have been hit as the skip lorry turned left near Tower bridge. Professor Rob Kemp, acting principal, said of Mr Vilaseca-Perez: "A brilliant scholar, he was widely respected internationally as a world-leading researcher."
