England football star Jermain Defoe will be sentenced next month for using a hand-held mobile phone while driving.

The Tottenham striker entered a written guilty plea at a hearing in August and his sentence will be decided by a district judge sitting in Chelmsford, Essex, on October 15.

Defoe, 27, of Cuffley, Hertfordshire, used the phone while driving a Range Rover in Loughton, Essex, in October 2009, a court heard.

He had been due to be sentenced by Chelmsford magistrates today but the hearing was adjourned.
