Japan bankruptcy numbers tumble

JAPANESE corporate bankruptcies fell in 2003 for the first time in four years, an independent research firm said.

The figure dropped 14.6% from a year ago to 16,624 in 2003.

Total debt owed by the companies that went under last year also fell, by 14.4% to 11.77 trillion yen (£61bn).
