Jailed girl racer taunted police: 'You're too slow'

12 April 2012

A driver serving a three-year ban who took four police cars on a 60mph chase through residential streets has been jailed for 12 months.

When Nakisha Mathurine, 25, eventually stopped she got out of her Ford Fiesta with her hands up and told officers: "You lot are too slow."

The mother of one raced through the streets of Newham, jumping three red lights and sending sparks flying as her car swerved from side to side through traffic.

Mathurine, who had a front seat passenger, first attracted police attention as she sped down Romford Road. Susan Hulme, prosecuting, told Inner London crown court: "The vehicle accelerated away, she whizzed through a pedestrian crossing where there were people present.

"She turned off down a side road, as her rear off-side wheel left the ground, then switched off her lights, and continued towards Barking Road."

Mathurine pulled in front of another police car which "took up pursuit". Moments later a third police car answering another emergency had to slam on its brakes to avoid hitting her.

Mathurine continued towards Canning Town and was seen swerving as she went through another red light and nearly hitting a lorry.

In East Ham she screeched over traffic humps "causing a kick-up of dust and dirt and possibly sparks". She swerved dangerously, changed lanes and had a near-collision with a fourth police vehicle before stopping.

Ms Hulme said: "She got out with her hands up saying: You lot are too slow'. " Judge Philip Shorrock said she had shown a "flagrant disregard for the rules of the road", particularly as she had been disqualified for three years in September last year.

She received 10 months for dangerous driving and two months consecutive for driving while disqualified after admitting both charges.

Mathurine, of Plaistow, received a further three-year driving ban.
