Ivan leaves Cuba behind

One of the fiercest storms ever recorded is heading for the Gulf of Mexico after killing 68 people across the Caribbean.

Hurricane Ivan's most recent victim was Cuba's sparsely-populated western tip, home to the country's famous cigar industry.

The storm left a trail of destruction earlier across the Caribbean, where winds of up to 200mph devastated Grenada and badly battered the Negril resort in Jamaica.

There were no immediate reports of deaths, injuries or serious damage following Ivan's assault on Cuba.

The hurricane drenched the island's western fields, battering power lines and trees. It simultaneously attacked the island of Grand Cayman where waves of up to 20 feet slammed George Town's sea wall.
