'It's more violent than New York'

12 April 2012

The seven-year-old son of former Arsenal and England footballer Ian Wright was terrified by carjackers who dragged him out of the family's £70,000 Porsche and drove off in it.

His mother, Deborah, 33, left Stacey alone for a few moments in the car on a garage forecourt in Purley while she went to pay for petrol. Mothers and nannies outside Newton prep school in Battersea, near the home of murdered estate agent Tim Robinson, expressed concern today at the rising tide of such crime in south London.

Harriet Parker, 35, who collects son Jack, four, in the family's VW Golf, described her school-run precautions. "I lock the doors every time I get in the car. I barely open the windows, I always look over my shoulder, keep the keys in my pocket, not my handbag."

American Monica Godwin, 42, who lives in South Kensington with son Otto, seven, and daughter Hannah, four, drives a 4x4 Mercedes like carjack victim Gloria Hamilton. She said: "In New York City I would not have as much to worry about as I do here. It's getting more violent - out of control."
