Israeli troops enter Bethlehem

13 April 2012

Israeli forces entered Bethlehem today for the first time in six months in a sweep for militants after a Palestinian policeman from the city killed 10 Israelis in a suicide bombing.

About 15 Israeli armoured vehicles took part in the operation. Israel handed Bethlehem to Palestinian police in July to bolster the "road map" to peace.

The Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades has claimed responsibility for the officer's attack on a bus in Jerusalem.

Near the West Bank city of Hebron, soldiers shot dead a Hamas militant who they said opened fire at them as they entered his house.
