Islington pub hopes to toast ‘green Oscar’

Shortlisted: Geetie Singh and chefs at the Duke of Cambridge organic pub in Islington
12 April 2012

A gastropub which was the first in Britain to go organic is tipped to win one of London's "green Oscars".

The Duke of Cambridge in Islington has been shortlisted for the Sustainable City Awards, run by the City of London. Other firms shortlisted include those behind a scheme at Bluewater shopping centre for turning 6,000 tonnes of waste into an education centre, and a project at Dulwich Picture Gallery, which aims to enrich the lives of elderly residents.

Duke of Cambridge boss Geetie Singh said: "When we started 11 years ago we actually had to hide the fact we are organic. It's heartening to see that everyone is now so interested in green issues."

The pub changes its menu to reflect the freshest local food — 80 per cent of which comes from the Home Counties. The aim of the awards is to boost the image of eco-friendly businesses. The winners will be announced on 18 February.
