Is Elle at an all-time low?

When Elle Macpherson was nowhere to be seen during one of fashion's busiest weeks, questions were asked about the state of her health.

Now the Australian model - known as The Body - has pulled out of her country's most prestigious racing event, the Melbourne Cup, where she was due to be a star guest next month.

The latest news comes amid claims that Miss Macpherson - who failed to make a scheduled appearance at London Fashion Week - has checked into a rehabilitation clinic following post-natal depression.

Her withdrawal from public life has fuelled speculation that she has been plunged into a mid-life crisis as she approaches her 40th birthday next year. There are rumours that she is at an all-time emotional low, suffering from 'exhaustion and stress'.

Miss Macpherson's family in Sydney are keeping tight-lipped about claims that she has been visiting the exclusive Meadows Clinic in Phoenix, Arizona.

Asked if it was true that her daughter was at the same clinic that treated Michael Barrymore, her mother Fran declined to comment.

But neither she nor the model's sister Mimi denied reports that Miss Macpherson was undergoing treatment. 'I'm not going there,' Mimi told Australian magazine New Idea, when pressed as to whether the rumours were fact or fiction.

Miss Macpherson recently admitted in a TV interview she had suffered 'a sort of post-natal depression' after the birth in February of her second son Cy.

She was also said to be devastated by a burglary at her former home in Notting Hill last year, in which almost £500,000 of jewellery was stolen.

Miss Macpherson and her millionaire businessman fiance Arpad Busson now live in Holland Park, West London, with Cy and their other son Flynn, five. They also have homes in Sydney, Ibiza, the Bahamas, Los Angeles and a chalet in Switzerland.

The couple announced their engagement last year. Yesterday, Miss Macpherson's Australian spokesman Patti Mostyn said: 'I haven't heard anything to suggest there are any problems with Elle anywhere.'
