Iran ‘must release bereaved mothers’

Clashes: anti-government protesters have fought with security forces on the streets

A rights group is demanding Iran release 33 mothers detained during weekly memorial vigils for their children killed in unrest since disputed elections in June.

The International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran says nine of the women received emergency medical treatment after the arrests on Saturday in a Tehran park where gatherings of the "mourning mothers" are held.

A statement said women were suffering from "various illnesses" but gave no further details. Iranian authorities have not commented.

Iran has dealt harshly with opposition groups after anti-government marches since last June. Demonstrations in late December ended in clashes between security forces and opposition supporters that left at least eight people dead.
