iPhone app to relive Tower of London's great escapes

12 April 2012

Visitors to the Tower of London will be able to take part in some of its most audacious escapes in the places where they really happened thanks to its first iPhone app.

Using sensors within the Tower to trigger content, families will be able to take part in a historically accurate game.

The escapades are based on the true stories of former inmates including the first escapee, Ranulf Flambard, who fled by rope from the White Tower in 1101 after throwing a party and getting his guards drunk.

Other characters include John Gerard, a Jesuit priest who wrote secret letters in orange juice before escaping by rope from the Cradle Tower into a boat in 1597.

Visitors download the app free and earn gold sovereigns as they complete tasks.
