Indian election begins

Indians began voting today at the start of a three-week parliamentary election, in which 670 million people are eligible to take part in the world's largest exercise in democracy.

Opinion polls have predicted a clear win for prime minister Atal Behari's Bharatiya Janata Party-led coalition, over the opposition Congress party of Sonia Gandhi, widow of assassinated prime minister Rajiv.
