'I killed Sally with bare hands'

The soldier who killed student Sally Geeson confessed in a suicide note to strangling her.

The letter, discovered in Lance-Corporal David Atkinson's Glasgow hotel room, read: "I killed a woman with my bare hands."

Police are now certain Atkinson sexually assaulted and murdered Miss Geeson, and fear he may have committed more crimes.

DNA tests linked Atkinson to Miss Geeson's naked body, discovered in woodland three miles away. Less than 12 hours after she was found in Madingley, Atkinson set himself alight and leapt from the sixth-floor window in Glasgow.

Police are now looking into reports from "a number of women, both inside and outside Cambridgeshire" who may have been other victims.

Miss Geeson, a final-year forensic science student, disappeared at about 1.30am on New Year's Day. Post mortem tests showed she had been asphyxiated.

Atkinson, a divorcee from Lanarkshire, was based at Waterbeach barracks near Cambridge. Army colleagues have described him as a sexual predator who roamed the streets at night.
