A fridge repair man thanked by Colin Firth in his Bafta acceptance speech admitted today he had "no idea" who the actor was.

Firth, 49, said he won because "the fridge guy" arrived at his home as he was about to send an email rejecting the lead role in A Single Man, which has also earned him an Oscar nomination.

Zak Marhri, 23, who works for ADK Kooling, said: "It was only when his personal assistant rang my work asking if the repair man who visited could attend a post-awards party that I twigged. It's a bit embarrassing really."

Mr Marhri, of Wembley, was unable to attend the party because he was working but watched Firth's speech online. "It obviously had a big impact on him," he said.
