? Never start a journey if feeling sleepy

? Avoid making long trips between midnight and 6am when natural alertness is low

? Stop for a 15-minute break every two hours on a long journey

? Find a safe place to stop - but not on the hard shoulder - if you begin to feel drowsy

? Drink two cups of coffee or a high-caffeine drink

? Take a short nap and resume the journey 15-20 minutes later

? Opening the window or turning up the radio does little to prevent someone falling asleep at the wheel
