How the raids unfolded

13 April 2012

This is how today's raids in connection with the London bombings last week unfolded:

0630: Anti-terror police carried out raids on four addresses in Leeds and the surrounding area:

  • Stratford Street, in the south Leeds area of Beeston.
  • Colenso Mount, in the neighbouring Holbeck area in south Leeds.
  • Lees Holm, in Dewsbury, near Wakefield, south of Leeds.

A little afterwards, they raid 51 Colwyn Road, also in Beeston and just a few minutes' walk from Stratford Street. Police tape also sealed off a number of cars parked nearby, including two Mercedes and a red Volkswagen car parked directly outside the house.

0900: The operation, the first linked directly to the bombings, was announced by Scotland Yard Commissioner Sir Ian Blair.
He said: "There have been a series of searches carried out in Yorkshire.
"Those searches are still going on. There's very little else I can say at the moment, but this activity is directly connected to the outrages on Thursday."

1130: 500-600 people are evacuated from homes and shops, and six roads are cordoned off around Alexandra Road in the Hyde Park Road area of Burley, in north Leeds.

1320: Army personnel carried out a controlled explosion at an undisclosed address in the Hyde Park Road area so that a property could be searched for explosives.

1445: Police evacuated Luton railway station and car park to recover a vehicle suspected of links with the terrorist attacks. A 100-metre cordon was placed around the train station.
