How Standard led world with royal engagement news

12 April 2012

The Evening Standard was the first newspaper to publish the announcement of the engagement.

Other publications around the world followed as the news spread. In America, the Washington Post declared the "era of Diana has returned" and said the event marked a "rebirth for Britain".

The Los Angeles Times described Britain as "grateful" for the good news and a "distraction" from government cutbacks.

The New York Times questioned if the new royal couple could succeed at acting like a modern family. But the Times of India suggested Miss Middleton was in good hands, describing William as "the most liked British royal".

The New Zealand Herald questioned the cost of a royal wedding amid government austerity measures.

The Australian reported their politicians had divided reactions, with republicans playing down the engagement.
