High earners thrive under Boris Johnson regime

12 April 2012

Boris Johnson came under fire over City Hall pay today as it emerged he had overseen an increase in senior staff earning more than £100,000.

The Mayor revealed in a written answer that the number of big earners had risen from 15 to 19 since he took power.

They include mayoral appointees such as chief of staff Sir Simon Milton and director of marketing Dan Ritterband, who each earn £127,784 a year.

Mr Johnson's own "efficiency czar" Nicholas Griffin, who is responsible for cutting costs at City Hall, is paid £102,750 for a 29-hour week. Two further highly paid posts are being advertised, taking the total to 21.

The 40 per cent increase comes as City Hall faces savage cuts from Whitehall, a public sector pay freeze and anticipated job losses.

The revelation is another knock to Mr Johnson's pledge to deliver better value for money for voters.

The Mayor's office said the increase was due to a restructuring of the Greater London Authority that led to the creation of a number of senior posts.

Labour's deputy leader at City Hall, John Biggs, said: "When the Tories say we're all in this together it obviously isn't quite what they mean. They're happy for everyone else to face pay freezes but when it comes to their own salaries it's a different matter."
