Heatwave disappears in storms

The topsy-turvy weather which has been wreaking havoc across Britain looks set to continue well into this week, forecasters warned last night.

Yesterday, the sunny skies of the weekend degenerated into humid, thundery showers which caused localised flash flooding.

But, despite the downpours, the temperature remained stifling in some areas. London recorded the highest overnight temperature in the country on Sunday, with the mercury not dipping below 22°C (77°F).

It was the eighth hottest night on record, according to the Met Office.

Parts of Norfolk also suffered, with temperatures staying above 21°C (71°F), while the rest of the country never dropped below 17°C (62°F).

' Temperatures were about ten degrees above average,' said a PA WeatherCentre spokesman.

Thundery showers sweeping in from the West caused bouts of flooding.

Glasgow suffered the worst of the rain, with 35mm falling between Sunday and yesterday morning.

The rain is set to continue eastwards, to Scotland and the North-East.

'Both areas will get a battering,' said the PA spokesman. 'But the rain will make everywhere feel a bit cooler.'

Meanwhile, coastguards in North Cornwall issued a warning yesterday after a teenager was swept out to sea. The 18-year-old and his girlfriend, from Essex, fell into the sea from a cliff path at Fox Cove, Treyarnon. She was rescued with mild hypothermia.

Disruption caused by last weekend's storms has left holidaymakers stranded without luggage. More than 7,000 suitcases were left behind at Heathrow.
