Harrods spree of £120,000 ID fraudster

12 April 2012

AN identity fraudster who went on a spending spree at Harrods after plundering £120,000 of a grieving daughter's inheritance is facing jail.

Sunday Ogunsipe, 27, walked into a branch of NatWest and transferred Caroline Elliot's account to himself and an unknown woman who posed as the victim. Incredibly, the couple were able to fool the bank and gained access to the victim's account without arousing suspicion.

Ogunsipe then blew £82,000 on designer watches and trinkets at Harrods and jewellers Wempe in New Bond Street.

The conman was arrested in July and denied the fraud. Eventually he confessed but claims he only made about £4,000 - with the rest being commandeered by four "bullies". He was due to be sentenced at Inner London crown court this afternoon.

Ms Elliot had deposited £150,000 into her NatWest account in October 2009 after the death of her mother. In April last year she used an ATM and discovered about £110,000 had been withdrawn.

Ogunsipe, of Stockwell, pleaded guilty to theft.
