Haiti missionary children go back to parents

12 April 2012

Children given to US missionaries six weeks ago after the earthquake in Haiti have been returned to their parents.

The 33 children had been living at an orphanage in Port-au-Prince since police stopped 10 Baptists taking them across the Dominican border.

Regilus Chesnel, 39, who was reunited with his four children, said: "I feel like God has come back to me." One of the missionaries is still in prison.

Florence Avrilier, 32, recovered her eight-year-old son. "I'm very happy. I had no hope I would ever get my son back again. This has been a very heartbreaking time for me," she said.

Each family was given about $260 along with food and blankets. The orphanage has also given the children counseling and warned parents about the dangers of child trafficking, said spokesman Line Wolf Nielsen.

Mr Chesnel said previously he had given his children to pastor Jean Sainvil, who was working with the missionaries, because he said that bodies buried under rubble in the El Citron area would cause disease.
