Gulf Tornado goes on display

12 April 2012

A historic RAF Tornado is going to the Imperial War Museum at Duxford, becoming the first of its make to be put on public display.

During the 1991 Gulf War the supersonic Tornado GR1, serial ZA465, flew 44 bombing missions - the most by an RAF Tornado during the war - carrying out daring low-flying attacks on Iraqi targets.

The GR1 model is a strike aircraft capable of carrying nuclear bombs. ZA465 first flew on 23 August 1983. It served in West Germany during the Cold War, and returned to Germany after the Gulf War with the 617 "Dam-busters" Squadron.

On Thursday it will fly to Duxford from its current base, Lossiemouth in Scotland.
