'In a way, glassblowing is almost performance art': London Glassblowing studio celebrates 40th anniversary

London Glassblowing is celebrating its 40th anniversary.

Founded in 1976 by Londoner Peter Layton, it's the oldest studio of its kind in the capital, and one of the oldest glassblowing studios in Europe.

London Live recently went down to the studio near London Bridge to talk to glass artists there.

“What makes it unique is the fact that we have both the gallery and the studio in the same place,” said artist Anthony Scala.

He continued, “It’s one of the appealing aspects of glass blowing that it’s almost performance art in a way.

“The public can come here and see the works being made right before the eyes.”

Watch the video above to hear from glass artist Bruce Marks how the process of glassblowing works, and see a piece of artwork getting made.

He said, “We use techniques that have been used for hundreds of years but the interesting thing about glass is you can always come up with something new that’s never been done before.

“That’s quite unique for a material that’s been used for over 2,000 years.”
