GKN lands Astech group in US

12 April 2012

ENGINEERING giant GKN bolstered its aerospace business today by buying the US airframe and engine products group Astech. GKN is paying £22m for the California-based company, which supplies the civil aviation and military markets.

Astech's technology uses welded titanium and alloy steel honeycomb panels to produce noise reduction structures for commercial aircraft. Its products are used to support structures for high stress military airframes and it has a share of the military after sales market.

Kevin Smith, managing director of GKN's aerospace business, said Astech would deliver 'significant growth' for the Redditch-based firm. He added: 'This is a profitable business with excellent technology which fits well with our existing titanium capabilities.'

Astech will be merged into GKN Aerospace Chemtronics, which already supplies airframes to the F22 fighter programme in the US from its base in San Diego.
