George Osborne's brother was barred from hospital

Banned: Adam Osborne was excluded from a Manchester hospital as a trainee. Right, shadow Chancellor George Osborne
12 April 2012

The younger brother of shadow Chancellor George Osborne was banned from a hospital after admitting prescribing anti-psychotic drugs to a cocaine-addicted prostitute.

Adam Osborne, 33, had also prescribed the woman drugs in "high-risk circumstances" two months previously, a General Medical Council hearing was told. None of his prescriptions had been recorded.

Associate clinical director Dr Sean Lennon told the hearing today he signed the order excluding the trainee psychiatrist from the Wythenshawe Hospital, Greater Manchester. He had met Dr Osborne on the same day a woman known as Miss B turned up at a hospital with Quetiapine tablets the doctor had prescribed.

Dr Lennon said he warned him about prescribing the drugs in "high risk" circumstances and reminded him that prescribing for himself or family members was against GMC guidance.

The trainee psychiatrist was originally suspended by the GMC in September 2008 for 18 months but in February 2009 he was allowed to continue practising subject to conditions.

The GMC now claim Dr Osborne's conduct was "inappropriate, misleading and not of the standards expected of a reasonably competent medical practitioner."

Dr Osborne is currently a specialist in psychiatric care at the John Howard Centre — a mental health unit in Hackney. He is charged with prescribing a contraceptive to his girlfriend, but failing to tell her GP, or amend her records; prescribing Zybarn to a family member and again failing to tell their GP; and giving a Miss B Quetiapine — to treat schizophrenia — and two other drugs, or saying anything to her doctor or amend her notes.

He admits all the charges, but denies that his current fitness to practise is impaired. The hearing continues.
