George Osborne: Budget will show UK can live within its means

12 April 2012

It is "absolutely crucial" that next week's Budget shows Britain can live within its means, Chancellor George Osborne said today.

Mr Osborne said next Tuesday's statement had to demonstrate to the nation and international investors that the new Government could meet the challenges it faces to tackle the country's soaring debt.

Mr Osborne told BBC Radio 4's Today programme: "The job of the Budget is to show not just the international investors but our own population that we can live up to the challenge, that we can deal with our problems.

"And in a series of decisive measures, I think we can show this country can live within its means.

"That is absolutely crucial. If we can't, then the recovery will stall, interest rates will go up, businesses will go bust, more people will be unemployed."
