Gatwick shut for emergency landing of plane filled with smoke

12 April 2012

Relieved passengers leave a plane after an emergency landing at Gatwick today. The airport was shut to allow the Flybe Dash 8 aircraft to land after it filled with smoke.

The flight, which took off from Paris with 46 passengers on board, was diverted on its way to Cardiff.

Nobody was injured but one passenger described the "hair-raising" moment the cabin began to fill with smoke.

Shayne Krige, a 36-year-old lawyer, posted messages on Twitter soon after, saying the landing was "a little scary — 20 minutes of diving, with smoke getting thicker".
