Wipeout Fusion

PlayStation 2

The only reason I ever bought a PlayStation was because of WipEout. The first year of our life together was beautiful, but as time went on I started to introduce other games into our relationship. Unfortunately WipEout didn't swing, so we parted amicably and moved on to pastures new. Then came Wip3out SE, again a dream to play, but sadly relationship number two only lasted six months.

Now we've got WipEout Fusion, and boy has he shaped up to be the best racer on PS2. The old-school features are still the same - you have weapon attacks, special attacks and a power-up boost, but this time round there are more playable modes from the start: arcade, anti-gravity, challenge, league and multiplayer.

But, best of all, you can race over pads which open shortcuts, raise or lower bridges or activate a 180-degree flip. I look forward to meeting more of the WipEout extended family. (HM)

Gunfighter: The Legend of Jesse James

PlayStation

Dust down yer six-shooters, cos it's time to fill a few rogue cowboys full of lead. Chuck your gun in your holster and saddle up as you become Jesse James, trying to shoot your way out of town. Effectively a Western variation on Time Crisis for the PS1, this hide'n'shoot game is pretty good fun, even if the graphics are a bit ropey.
There's also a nice sideshow of sub-games to keep you amused, and using a pad is simple if you haven't got a G-Con 1 gun. Nothing to blow you away, but the spaghetti Morricone-esque music is great, as are the asides by some Clint sound-a-like. (NP)
