Genme Onimusha

Xbox

Onimusha Warlords, one of PlayStation 2's best games transfers to the Xbox format. But Genma Onimusha is more than a straight copy. Set in medieval Japan, your samurai hero battles all manner of undead foes and demon warriors in an attempt to get his bird back. Seems like a lot of trouble for a girl he hardly knows, although she is a Princess so is bound to have a bit of cash put away for a rainy day.
Although not an entirely different game, the extras make it feel as if it is. Almost. There's new attacks, new enemies and a strange new tug-of-war affair for the souls of demons who you've helped jump ship from this mortal coil. But most importantly there's some new areas, too. The PlayStation 2 game looked stunning, but the Xbox version is even sharper, with the only quibble being the mildly confusing controller configuration. But hey, that's a problem for the geeks. Go enjoy. (NP)

Shadow Man: Second Coming

PlayStation 2

It's Shadow Man's debut on PS2 after its success on PS1. This is a game that shouldn't be judged on the first hour of play, because you're going to need that long for Shadow Man to really kick into gear. Once it does it's seriously good fun, with your main Voodoo man tripping between the real world and 'Deadside', the Underworld. Your job is to prevent Armageddon no less, so no stopping for tea and Jaffa Cakes. Looks good, plays good (except for the annoying inability to rotate your character), this is far better than the original, primarily due to the variation of environments and great use of sound. (NP)

Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee

Xbox

The third in the series of Oddworld games, Munch's Oddysee introduces a new lead to join the green, goblin-like Abe. Munch, the last remaining example of the Gabbit species (all the others having been taken by the evil Glukkons to be made into caviar) teams up with Abe (after he rescues him from captivity) and embarks on ridding the world of Glukkon tyranny. Controlling two characters rather than one has really helped this game pass through my quality control. Although it's a very smart game with great puzzles, there's just not enough variety in those puzzles to keep it completely entertaining throughout. (HM)
