Full Baby P report published to stop tragedy happening again

12 April 2012

THE secret report into the death of Baby Peter will be published so that the full extent of child protection failures in Haringey can be revealed, ministers announced today.

Labour had previously refused to publish the full reports of official reviews into serious cases of abuse or neglect, allowing only summaries to be published. But now serious case review (SCR) reports will be released so that lessons can be learned from what went wrong, Education Under Secretary Tim Loughton said.

The names of vulnerable children and other individuals will be removed from the reports. Mr Loughton announced that the SCRs into the death of 17-month-old Peter Connelly in Haringey will be the first to be published. And he ordered a wide-ranging government review of child protection, to be led by London social work expert Professor Eileen Munro. She wants to cut red tape so that social workers can spend more time with vulnerable children.
