From comp to co-op: Jamie's Dinners school to be academy

Jamie's School Dinners: The TV series was filmed at Kidbrooke School in Greenwich
12 April 2012

The school where Jamie Oliver filmed his campaign against unhealthy school dinners will become an academy this year.

Kidbrooke School in Greenwich will be called Corelli College, after the name of the road where it is located, and become independent of the council from September. It will be the first school in Greenwich to become an academy.

The country's first purpose-built comprehensive, it featured in Channel 4's series Jamie's School Dinners in 2005. Dinner lady Nora Sands shot to fame as she helped the chef ban junk food and convince parents not to hand their children food from McDonald's through the railings.

From next term the school will run itself as a co-operative, meaning students, staff, parents and the local community can become "members" and have a say in how it is run.

A spokesman for the Co-operative College, which is working with the school, said the emphasis on healthy eating would continue.
