Fresh warnings over sunbeds

Sunbeds should carry health messages warning people they can kill, say radiation experts.

A report published today by an influential government advisory committee also calls for a ban on under-18s using sunbeds and compulsory licensing for all salons.

Sunbeds can be blamed for 100 deaths a year in Britain and 370 cases of skin cancer, according to the Committee on Medical Aspects of Radiation in the Environment.

The committee warns there is also evidence of an increased risk of skin cancer among those who use sunbeds before the age of 35.

Chairman Professor Alex Elliott said ministers must bring in strict controls especially targeted at young children.

He said: "We believe that upwards of 100 deaths a year in the UK are caused by sunbed use and there are also separate consequences of other types of cancer.

"These are ones which don't kill but disfigure and where patients need plastic surgery at a cost to the NHS of up to £200 million a year."

There are about 8,000 tanning outlets in the UK and the number is growing — especially coin-operated booths popular with children.

The Sunbed Association has previously said there is no proven link between skin cancer and the "responsible use" of sunbeds which expose users to ultra-violet radiation.

But the committee says many salons are now using "superstrength" sunbeds which deliver high doses of dangerous radiation.

People who use these sunbeds are exposing themselves to more UV radiation than is produced by the Mediterranean sun.

As well as skin cancer and premature ageing, sunbeds can cause eye damage and Comare is recommending that all outlets provide protective eyewear.
