Free Amazon software will let iPhones read e-books

Amazon's new software will allow people to read books on iPhones
12 April 2012

Amazon today launched a free piece of software that can turn an iPhone into an electronic-book reader.

It will allow people to download and read books from Amazon's website without having to buy a dedicated e-book device, which costs hundreds of pounds.

The iPhone is able to display a full page of text onscreen. Users can zoom in, and turn pages by swiping a finger. More than 300,000 books are available electronically, including modern bestsellers and classic texts.

iPhone users can visit Amazon's website on their phone and choose books to buy. They are then automatically downloaded to the Kindle software.

Amazon already gives away the Kindle software for desktop PCs, and is planning a version for the Mac and the BlackBerry.

Ian Freed of Amazon said: "We are excited to make the Kindle for iPhone App available to iPhone and iPod touch users in more than 60 countries, allowing them to access the vast selection of the most popular books, all available wirelessly from the Kindle Store."
