Four homes raided by carjacking gang

Philip Nettleton12 April 2012

A gang of carjackers is believed to have carried out four terrifying raids on homes across London in the early hours of today.

In one attack the men burst into a couple's bedroom to demand the keys to their car.

Two high-performance Subaru cars and a BMW M3 Coupe with a total value of about £90,000 were stolen.

The robbers first struck at 2.40 at a home in Albany Park Avenue, Enfield. A 48-year-old man and his wife, aged 47, were woken by the sound of breaking glass and the front door being smashed down.

In desperation they tried to barricade themselves into their bedroom but one man forced the door open with a metal bar and told them he had a gun. They stole the keys to their red Subaru Impreza and sped away.

Less than an hour later four masked and armed men threatened the occupants of a home in Langton Avenue, Barnet, and stole a blue Subaru car.

At 4.30 five men, one armed with a pistol, broke into a house in Heather Gardens, Romford, and stole the keys to a blue BMW coupe which was later found abandoned in Tottenham.

Two hours later, in Waterfall Road, Southgate, a 55-year-old man and his wife, 54, refused to open their front door as a robber told them to give him the keys to the car.

The man threatened the couple with a gun but the suspects ran off without the keys and jumped into a red Subaru. Police said no shots were fired during any of the attacks and no one was injured but the victims have been traumatised and were treated for shock. The suspects in each incident are described as black. Police are working on the theory that all four raids were carried out by the same gang.

One officer said: "These were all frightening attacks. It is entirely possible the robbers were simply driving around the streets just looking into driveways to see what sort of car was parked there or they were targeted attacks and they had planned a careful route.

"The worry is the cars will be used in other serious criminal activity."
