Five quizzed as teenager is killed in 'frenzied' stabbing

13 April 2012

Five teenagers are being questioned by police after an 18-year-old was stabbed to death in a 'frenzied' attack at the weekend.

Lewis Singleton was knifed several times in the stomach during a row on Saturday morning.

Paramedics were called to an address in Woolston, Southampton, at around 2am.

They took Mr Singleton to Southampton General Hospital but he died from his injuries.

Detectives investigating the murder yesterday arrested two 15-year-old boys and a 16-year-old youth. They were also granted extra time to question two 18-year-old men arrested on Saturday.

Two men aged 26 and 28, who had been held, were released without charge.

Friends have used a website to pay tribute to Mr Singleton, a keen footballer, and call for a clampdown on knife crime.

A family member called Alan wrote: "A great loss to everyone especially us, your loving family.

"You were a bright twinkling star in our eyes. May justice prevail. There are no real honourable men left in this world, just gangs of yellow-bel-lied thugs."

A friend called Natalie, from Southampton, said: "R.I.P. He was a friend, and had no reason to die young. Knife crime has got to be stopped, it's a problem to everyone not just the people involved.

"Make it stop before it happens to people who didn't deserve it, like this young man."

The attack comes after a series of knife murders across London in recent weeks.

They include the stabbing of 15-year-old Adam Regis in Plaistow last month. The nephew of Olympic athlete John Regis was killed with a sword.

A 19-year-old man was last night charged with the murder of Jaspreet Singh, 25, who was stabbed while waiting for a bus in Ilford, Essex, on Saturday morning.

Kamuzu Munroe, who is unemployed and from Ilford, will appear at Redbridge Magistrates court today.
