Final appeals for death row Briton

James Langton12 April 2012

Death row Briton Tracy Housel is choosing his final meal today amid a flurry of last-minute legal moves to call off his execution on Tuesday.

Lawyers for the British national are pressing for a stay of execution, claiming that his death sentence is a violation of international human rights.

After an initial hearing in Georgia today, this latest move is expected to be settled by the US Supreme Court, America's highest legal authority, on Monday.

Housel's legal team will also appeal to the Georgia parole board to get his sentence commuted to life imprisonment. Housel, 43, was convicted for the 1985 rape and murder of 46-year-old Jeanne Drew.

Housel admits the killing but says he did not know what he was doing because of brain damage from a childhood accident and a medical condition that means he cannot tell right from wrong.

After choosing a last meal and non-alcoholic drink from a takeaway restaurant the prisoner will be moved to the "death house" at the Georgian Diagnostic and Classification Prison in Jackson. His lawyer, Robert McGlasson, said: "We are not going to give up until every legal avenue has been exhausted."
