'Feudal' killer tried to inject wife with rat poison

12 April 2012

Mehmet Goren was a workshy gambler and convicted criminal who ruled his wife and four children with his fists.

Even before he killed Tulay, he had tried to inject his wife with rat poison and gas his entire family. He beat up his older daughter, Nuray, because of her choice of husband.

Goren, now 49, brought his family into this country illegally in the mid-Nineties by paying thousands of pounds to the "Sebeke" people smuggling network.

They applied for political asylum and settled in Woodford Green. Mehmet followed in 1996 after completing jail sentences in Turkey and Saudi Arabia.

In court he admitted hitting Tulay three times and his son Tuncay, who was even younger than his sister, "four or five times".

Even his wife Hanim was knocked about. "I may have slapped her here and there, minor incidents, but if you talk about hitting her for the purposes of beating her, it happened twice," he said.

Goren had short spells working in fast food shops but spent most of his time living off benefits. He refused to learn English.

Mrs Goren said Tulay would be alive now if her boyfriend had offered Goren a dowry which he would have spent on gambling.

His willingness to react with extreme violence to any perceived threat to his status was described as "feudal".

Six months after he finally agreed to sister Nuray's wedding, Tulay was dead.
