Jimena Navarrete from Guadalajara in Mexico has been named Miss Universe in a ceremony in Las Vegas.

The 22-year-old won after telling the judges she believed it was important to teach children family values.

The show - hosted by Poison rocker Brett Michaels - was broadcast in the US last night.

The 83 contestants were whittled down to 15 in the first five minutes of the show with judges choosing beauties from Puerto Rico, Ukraine, Mexico, Belgium, Ireland, South Africa, France, Australia, Jamaica, Russia, Albania, Columbia, Guatamala, Czech Republic and the Philippines for the final.

Miss Navarrete went on to impress the judges in the swimsuit round, in her evening gown and also in the questions round.

Miss Philippines became the fourth runner up, Ukraine was the third, Australia second runner up and Miss Jamaica was the first runner up.
