Family of four killed in road crash

13 April 2012

A family returning from holiday has been killed in a seven-car crash, police said.

The man, woman and two children were making their way home to the Midlands, having been on holiday in France, when the crash happened near Oxford.

They were killed when a car transporter, a lorry and five cars were in collision on the A34 on Monday afternoon.

A further three men were taken to the Horton General and John Radcliffe Hospitals, one with a broken wrist the other two with cuts and bruises.

The identities of the victims of the crash have not yet been released by police.

The road was closed in both directions for nearly 12 hours following the accident, causing large delays.

As well as recovery of the vehicles and police investigations, emergency repairs had to be carried out to the road, a Thames Valley police spokesman said.

The road has now been reopened.

Inspector Steve Bridges, from Oxfordshire Roads Policing Department, said: "While we are still investigating the cause of this tragic collision we are keen to hear from anyone who was travelling along the A34 who may have witnessed the crash."
