European airlines bid for war cover

EUROPE'S airlines are attempting to launch their own insurance fund to cover terrorist or war-related liabilities so they can keep fleets across the Continent flying.

Individual European Union States' emergency guarantees to underwrite airlines' insurance brought in after the 11 September terrorist attacks come to an end later this month.

The Association of European Airlines is seeking to set up a $1.5bn (£1.06bn) fund, financed by a 30p-per-ticket surcharge on carriers, with EU governments covering damages above that level.

But there are fears that governments including Britain's are unwilling to back a plan where they could be liable for claims not affecting their national airlines.
